THE GHOSTS OF SHOPPING PAST: brian ulrich

this is a really cool project from photographer BRIAN ULRICH.

he takes on these really interesting theme projects, this one entitled "the ghosts of shopping past."

the photos in this project document currently abandoned malls and other stores in various states of decay. What comes out of it is an eerie vibe of a post-apocalyptic consumer united states. It looks like everyone on earth just disappeared then someone took pictures of it ten years later.

really neat project and he has a lot more like out.

the future is.... YEASAYER

YEASAYER is an experimental band based out of NY, NY.

they describe their music as "Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel." Ha. I would relate them pretty closely to an ANIMAL COLLECTIVE type band, with a little bit less electronic influence. Also, they toured with MGMT and MAN MAN last year.

they are pretty wild, and they definitely jam pretty hard.

Check em out in the playlist (especially AMBLING ALP) or at their website: here

enjoy!

POMPLAMOOSE pt. 2

I know I've blogged about this band before, but they are too legit.

POMPLAMOOSE is a boyfriend/girlfriend duo from California.

they've gained some recognition based on their youtube videos which show their style of "ORGANIC MUSIC." this means that the video clips you see at any given time in the videos are footage of the actual live take they used during recording. Confused? check out a video and you will understand.

I just enjoy their overall sound. PLUS they have a sick earth, wind, and fire cover (september) in the playlist!

POPE JOHN PAUL II HALL, croatia

the new POPE JOHN PAUL II HALL in croatia is spectacular

the perfect example of a simple concept executed perfectly

I really like the modular bricks and how the variances between the bricks form the openings in the brick skin of the structure. A beautifully simple expression. I love it.

from ArchDaily:
"The new construction consists of two elements: a generic volume of the hall and a columned portico that creates a new public square within the monastery. The Hall is cladded in a single terracotta-brick surface with a pixelated structure created by the changing gap between the elements, bringing the light in the hall."

the AVALANCHES

THE AVALANCHES are a music group from Melbourne, Australia. They're most well known for their live DJ sets and the live DJ sounds of their albums.

basically, these guys jam REAL hard.

they're most well known for their song "since I left you" in which they used almost 4000 different samples. Also, their "frontier psychiatry" video which is AWESOME. enjoy the track in the playlist and PLEASE check the video: here

THIS IS IT! the review.....

well, I did it. I saw THIS IS IT, the Michael Jackson movie in theaters for a few weeks.

and I must say. It was...... awesome.

no kidding. It was a really enjoyable movie. The music and especially the dancing is off the charts. It really gives you a feel for what a performer MJ was. The good thing was, the movie wasn't about his life. It really wasn't about his past at all. The film was really about how NUTS these 50 shows were going to be. It has all the performances you want to see (thriller, billy jean, smooth criminal, man in the mirror, etc) plus a good many that I wasn't familiar with (human nature, earth song, etc). In a funny turn of events, the songs I didn't know ended up being some of the best performances. The behind-the-scenes footage is really cool too. It shows Michael and the band rehearsing and figuring out a lot with the songs. In the movie he sings live with a live band, and the performers in the band (along with the backup dancers) are spectacular. And little did I know MJ was so musically knowledgeable, there are rehearsal parts where he is specifically directing the band or players. Sweet. The movie actually makes him come off as somewhat normal. He even made me laugh a few times with some of his comments.

Anyways, GO SEE IT. if you still can. I'm going to buy it regardless, when it comes out, because it was just so entertaining.

JAMS

ps: check out the special edition cover of thriller, haha. awesome tiger Mike

the SuperFoam chair by RICH GILBERT

created by artist /designer RICH GILBERT, the superfoam chair is slick.

made by filling a mold-box with balloons then pouring in a plastic mold. After the plastic dries, he pops and removes all of the balloons leaving what?....... SUPERFOAM!

Love both idea, the scale of the foam, and the style of construction.

actual photo, wow

This photo is so cool, it doesn't even look real!

It's a shot of the over 250 foot tall DELTA-4 HEAVY lifting off from Cape Canaveral. It's the worlds tallest rocket.

the photographer BEN COOPER had to remotely trigger the camera from over three miles away to snap this gem.

well done. click on the photo to magnify

and today... the future of furniture... FUTURNITURE!

First off, wooden stools by JUDITH SENG

these stools are so neat looking. I especially enjoy the juxtaposition of natural and fabricated wood, as if it grows from the ground and blends with the fabricated form.

beautiful and simple

Secondly, the "hush chair" by NAUGHTONE.

a modern re-imagination of the classic wing-backed armchair, it's made of molded plywood, foam, and upholstery.
